Pulled the gear case apart on said outboard. Not pretty inside, but
have seen worse. It had water intrusion and the bottom half of the
gear case has a crack. Anyway, it will need some new bearings.
I’m a little stymied in looking a the parts diagrams Frank gave me,
comparing them to my driveshaft and pinion gear set up.
The parts diagram shows an upper and lower pinion bearing, parts
#33 & 42. The lower one, 33, looks like a needle bearing.I have “one” tapered roller bearing, and large threads on the
driveshaft above the bearing, “use” unknown. The drive shaft in
the diagrams shows no such threads.Did someone throw a driveshaft in this unit from a different model?
It’s been apart previously for sure. The upper drive shaft bushing (part #52)
is so loose on the OD that it spins around in the bore. Can’t be the right one.
Thoughts appreciated.Prepare to be boarded!
June 16, 2019 at 6:30 pm #177345I say it is not the original lower unit. Probably a 1955-era 25hp. And that drive shaft??? God only knows what happened there.
The “loose” drive shaft bushing was an engineering change back then also. It’s supposed to spin.

on it……. can’t be the original… duh.
I was looking at those “threads” on the driveshaft again. Only thing I can think of that it’s
a homemade stop so the pinion gear doesn’t bottom out on the splines. Perhaps some kind
of backlash control? Will look at some Evinrude lower unit diagrams on ME and see if they jive with what I got!
Thanks!I say it is not the original lower unit. Probably a 1955-era 25hp. And that drive shaft??? God only knows what happened there.

June 16, 2019 at 9:23 pm #177352Frank, I looked at the diagram for my 1955 RDE-17 Johnson, and it has the same style and part number
pinion gear bearing (cone and cup) as the Evinrude LU on the Gale I’m working on.
I think you solved that mystery. Looks like parts are available.
Thanks!Prepare to be boarded!
