Looks like a beautiful rig to me….The engine looks nice, hopefully well cared for. Yeah, the old V4s were thirsty, but great for pulling out tree stumps. Powerful and quiet. Like others said, wouldn’t worry too much about the lack of a generator, just use a good battery with a lot of reserve capacity…These engines usually crank right up with minimal effort, the recoil is there for emergencies….
Be careful when charging the battery though, be sure to disconnect the battery cables first…You never know about shore power wiring, and you wouldn’t want to boil the aluminum off the gearcase…..1 user thanked author for this post.
December 8, 2020 at 11:43 am #224621Thank you so much everyone, for taking so much time on this! I’m looking at it on Friday (weather permitting). I won’t be making a decision on the spot but will try to snap better photos. Stay tuned and thanks again!
December 8, 2020 at 1:23 pm #224635Yeah, I had to look at it 6 or 7 times to make up my mind. It is the port mounting bracket #64 in the parts diagram.
Oh yeah – I see it’s the mounting bracket now! I haven’t had a V4 since the early 1980s, and my memory that far back gets sketchy!

December 8, 2020 at 5:08 pm #224650Yes, what Dave said …Good motor and looks like a nice rig. I have a 1961 Unicharger 75 HP Evinrude that has mechanical gear shift. This was a unique ( and good) one year arrangement. These motors are very reliable. Good that yours has the mechanical shift. Mine has fixed high speed carb jets, no adjusting except for idle, yours might be also. Yours has magneto ignition, spark independent of battery. My model has a conventual 12 volt ( automotive style) ignition, requires a charged battery, hence the 20 amp alternator. The motor runs good and strong, pushes my 1957 17ft Thompson Sea Lancer to 34 MPH. I think that your boat is essentially the same.
Nice boat , go for itJoe B

December 10, 2020 at 3:56 am #224794Wow does that old boat bring back some memories! My pop had one just like that, maybe a couple years older. I learned to water ski behind that old girl. It pulled like a tractor! Dad used to carry four six gallon cans with him when ever he went boating. I thought the 17 footer had a hatch in the bow. Might have been an option. Our boat was like yours no bow hatch. We used it a lot the first few years we had it. At one point it set for over a year. When we finally got it back in the water it leaked so bad we almost lost it in the drink at the boat ramp! After that dad would run the garden hose in it and put about four inches of water to get the wood to swell up before he would take it out, after he did that it was fine. Sure is a nice looking out fit!

One of my favorite songs indeed! Thanks Allen Jackson!
December 23, 2020 at 12:12 pm #225795Well, I had a chance to look at the rig yesterday. The motor’s a 75hp Johnson with a manual shift. I can’t really tell if it has the ability to charge the battery, maybe y’all could shed some more light on what it is from the attached photos. It is Model #: V4SL-15R with Serial #: 2397358. I’ll be anxious to hear what everyone has to say. Thanks!
