Hi all, my 28HP stars and dies in about 10 seconds. It’s a new motor to me, and I did not know it’s history. The motor did run well when I purchased it, but I decided to rebuild the carb anyway to be on the safe side. New float, gaskets, needle packing , 10 minutes in the ultrasonic cleaner etc…..Now it starts (better with the choke engaged) and dies.

I don’t even have to squeeze the primer, I try to start it and each time it starts and dies . I have tried the factory manual settings on the high and low speed jets plus every other imaginable combination. There is also a film of gas in the carb throat.D9618903-A820-4367-9FFB-9F9EE702F834

Did some research in old posts for a similar problem, and many pointed to a clogged air vent. Does this motor/ carb have one.

Open to any ideas before I tear the carb apart.

      Thanks,
      Bob D

If you continue to squeeze the bulb will it continue running?

Didn’t try, since I was at the front of the boat with the starter switch. Will definitely try tomorrow when I have some help.
Did some additional digging online and since gas was on the bottom of the throat of the carb, it was mentioned that the float valve possibly  isn’t seating.
When I rebuilt the carb  I replaced it with a new washer, valve and needle, along with a new float. Possibly something is wrong in that area. Will keep digging.

I don’t think the gas in the carb is the problem.   Or the vent (the big hole beside the LS needle)

Have you checked the ignition (coils)) ?  If they are the originals, they probably are shot.

BTW, what’s with the fuel pump upside down?

I was thinking the float is installed upside down. A rookie mistake that I have made myself, long after being a real rookie.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Here is what I got done today:
Checked spark – it was good, changed fuel pump, (Frank please look at the picture of the new pump I really don’t know how to flip it 180?). I also took the carb apart, the new float was installed  correctly, needle and seat were correct also. Got fresh gas, and tried a different fuel tank.
It started and ran the usual 10 seconds in neutral then died, so I got it started and quickly shifted into forward (in a tank) . It stayed running longer, but  was was backfiring through the carb. I couldn’t idle it down, and  when I did it would die.
I pulled the flywheel, this afternoon, and will check through the points and coils, and make sure the spark plug wires aren’t reversed. The flywheel key looks good.
Any other suggestions, this one has me stumped.

                    Thanks,

                    Bob D

I’m not saying the upside down fuel pump has anything to do with this particular problem.  It just caught my eye, that’s all.  It was found some time ago that SOME fuel pumps would develop an air bubble if upside down and not pump properly. I don’t know if the one on your motor shares that problem or not.  Anyhoo, here is an explanation as applies to a similar pump.

Darn, I really thought I had it, with the upside down float! When I have done that, what seems to happen is that it will run poorly, with a very low fuel level in the carb bowl and starve for fuel quickly with any throttle applied.. Oh well. How about the adjustment of the economizer link, and general synch and link by the book?
