Just picked up a 64 Evinrude 28HP . It looks as if the previous owner added electric start but stuffed all of the electrical components under the hood. It starts fine, but I would like to add the control box to the transom and move the start switch to the dash.
I checked Marine Engine for 1964 electrical components, but their listing ends with 1972.
Would anyone have a parts listing for the 1964 model year?
Thanks,
Bob DAugust 18, 2021 at 10:50 am #245083OK, well I found the junction box layout for the 64 40hp, thinking that would be the same…
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1964&hp=40&model=RDL-26&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=Junction+Box+Assembly
You are going to have a hard time finding all these new NOS parts, and will pay big money as well…
You may consider leaving that solenoid at the engine pan and making up a wiring harness that can run up front to key switch, along with two batter cables coming out of the engine which are already there…
The one component you are missing here is the electric choke mechanism on the carburetor meaning you would have to flip the choke on back at the engine…
Lots of little pieces/parts to consider here….August 18, 2021 at 12:18 pm #245095Boy, my post got messed up. Now it’s posting twice. Sorry.
Can anyone combine?
Don, I’m beginning to think the same thing . Leave the solenoid where it is ,make a new harness and run the key, kill switch and a choke up front.
I guess I will be on the hunt for an electric choke for the 28HP. I wonder if the electric choke part numbers listed for the 40HP on
Marineengine are the same for the 28?? No listing of a electric choke on their 28 parts breakdown.
Thanks,
Bob DAugust 18, 2021 at 12:52 pm #245097I would suggest using the 1965 33hp parts book as a reference. The 4o hp would have the automatic choke.

Definitely want the manual one. Will use the 33 HP for reference.
If anyone has a choke they want to let go, please pm me.
Bob DAugust 19, 2021 at 12:19 am #245124Found a picture of the correct solenoid (0385554) and I have a wiring question. I plan to do a simple SPST push switch.
I see that it gets its power to the one terminal on the bottom of the solenoid.
Does it get its motor ground from being attached to the carburetor?
Thanks,

Bob DYou are referring to the choke solenoid, correct? If so, yes, gets its ground through the carb body….

Does your engine have a stop switch? If so, you will want to add the two mag leads to the mix and use a conventional key switch…. Otherwise, I’m sure you can just shut the engine off by just pulling back on the throttle….August 20, 2021 at 11:49 am #245224Don, the fellow that installed, the botched job way back when did however install a kill switch at the dash.
So I’m good there.
The only wiring info that I’ll use from the old diagram is where to pick up the power and wiring direction for the choke switch, since the start switch and kill switch were wired properly.
So the final finished product will be a push start switch, push choke, and a kill switch at the dash.
I also was lucky enough to find a complete choke assembly off a 1964 28HP !!
Dan Gano (great guy) was nice enough to go through his boxes of old carbs and found a good used unit.
Thanks,
