I decided to see if I can upgrade the 66 Evinrude’s powerhead
suspension system with the 71 Johnson parts motor clamshells
and the exhaust water cooled cover, so I can use the
two vibration dampers from the 71 model. There appeared to be some differences with the throttle linkages
under the hood, and the Johnson front panel was one piece, the Evinrude two.
Hopefully I can make it all work out.So far, I’ve only switched around the water cooled exhaust cover.
Tomorrow, I may see if the port clamshell crack is repairable.Prepare to be boarded!
February 8, 2023 at 10:34 pm #272536I had some memory of people fixing 9.5 hp mounts before (the word urethane came into my head).
Found these, in case they’re of any use:https://www.aomci.org/forums/topic/9-5hp-johnson-evinrude-characteristics/

February 9, 2023 at 9:45 am #272549Phil, thanks for the links. It looks like I even posted on that six year
old thread…… but forgot!
My problem was I couldn’t find any broken mounts, but it was still
shaking and knocking. Hopeful I can upgrade using the 71 clamshells
with the vibration dampers.Prepare to be boarded!
February 9, 2023 at 1:59 pm #272560Here’s a members 1965 Evinrude 9.5 motor. No shaking at all when in gear.
February 9, 2023 at 6:02 pm #272571Mumbles, Pretty good, and I don’t seen any “add on” vibration damper upgrades……
at least not on the starboard side shown.I cleaned the 71 clamshells with the vibration dampers, and the 71 transom mount,
and hope to “try” to start putting it all back together on the 66 powerhead, in a couple of days.
I alumi-welded up the crack in the one clamshell, on the inside of the shell,
and put some JB weld on the outside of the crack. Not pretty, but doubt if
it’s going to show anyway.Prepare to be boarded!
February 9, 2023 at 8:19 pm #272579The one shown by mumbles must have the (unbroken) front-mount vibration damper.
February 10, 2023 at 10:23 pm #272624Did a bunch of cleaning this morning, then
I started putting the clam back in the clamshells today.
I cut three 1/8″ thick rubber gasket circles to glue to
the bottom side rubber mounts, and the bottom rear,
to help tighten things up.
The newer style clam shells with the vibration damper
on each side seemed to really “snug” things up too.I wished I had a video from years ago when I got the motor,
and tested it in the barrel, to show how bad the clam was
shaking in it’s shell…. hopefully this time around will be better!Prepare to be boarded!
