I have 1968 Crestron with a 1970 Evinrude 40hp. The shifter cable “shroud” has broken and thus it won’t shift into reverse. I need to replace the cable but I don’t see how the control box comes off the side of the boat. It appears to be held on with two (rusted head) rivets going through the box. Anyone know how these control boxes come apart. Also, any idea where to source the correct cable? I thought about trying to repair the shroud but I know there’s no real way to make this work properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
January 24, 2021 at 3:30 pm #228697Is this your control? It is held to the boat by four screws (#3), and held together by two screws (#7) coming in from the backside. BUT you say yours is held to the boat by rivets? Those must be something substituted by the boat rigger guy.
Any Evinrude dealer can supply OEM cables, and any marine dealer can supply aftermarket cables (Sea Star, etc)
You should be aware that the cables design was changed in 1979. Not an issue unless you have a 1979-up control.
January 24, 2021 at 3:53 pm #228701Yes, that is my control box. I will look again to see if there’s any way to get the unit off. I appears that where the #3 screw is on the diagram there are rivet heads (i.e. no slot or philips screw). Maybe looks more like a rusted carriage bolt head from what I can see. Maybe it’s through bolted to the side of the boat with a carriage bolt. When I say side of the boat it’s trim work not the actual side of the boat.
January 24, 2021 at 3:54 pm #228702Teleflex 400 series cables (includes parts #51, 53 and 54 above) are excellent replacements at reasonable prices, but you need the plastic end-pieces from your old cable, or new pieces (Parts #41and the little parts that attach to the ends). They are sold in increments of one foot, and it’s important they are the right length. Several places sell them. If you have the style control box that is a few years older than the one shown above, the cables and related parts that hook to the motor are all the same. Below is a link to a place I have bought from:

January 24, 2021 at 3:59 pm #228705Assuming I get the old one off, is this the cable I need? Proper length required of course.

January 24, 2021 at 4:02 pm #228706Sorry, I didn’t see Otbdnut2 post before my post. So the boaters island units linked above will fit the schematic in post #2? Re-using my ends assuming they are good.
January 24, 2021 at 4:55 pm #228712Thanks for the help. Schematic helped for sure. Two rusted as heck carriage bolts holding it on. It’s off now so I just have to disconnect the cable and measure it now.

Yup! and The boaters island ones are the same ones you found at wholesalemarine.
DaveFebruary 1, 2021 at 7:45 pm #229255Thought I’d close the thread. Ordered cable from Boater’s Island. Installed over the weekend. Shifts like buttah now. Thanks everyone for the help.
