      UPDATE:

I’ve located the “nickel sized freeze plug” located on the block that that Retiredoz referred to.  The model ID # is E6SLCDE.

OK, so it is a 1986 model.

First attempt failed so here it is.

OK, so it is a conventional 5″ extension, althought the extension has the exhaust relief for more reverse thrust.

Can you tell me how to post a link?  I found a PDF service manual for a 1986 6HP but for some reason I cannot post the link to the site it is for sale on.

The site has a spam filter and it really likes to flag posts with external links.  That is what happened to your 13 attempts to post that harmless link.  Sorry that has happened.  Your post with the link is now up and available.

I’ve realised that with my learning curve and the time involved in getting a service manual, etc., I’m not going to get this done this season, so I’m going to spend the money to have her restored by a professional, which is what I was trying to avoid.   As I feared, I have bitten off more than I can chew.  I dropped it off at a repair shop today.  Thanks for all the advice.

                      cheers,

                      Peter

PS I’m going to acquire a service manual and hope to do the maintenance myself.

I understand your  desire to let a “professional” look at it.  But please know that not all “professionals” are very professional.  Get an estimate first, unless the shop says the engine needs very little to get back into service.

Go ahead and get that service manual, and let us know if the shop wants big bucks to get the engine going again, post the estimate here.
