I have a 1968 Johnson FD 22E long shaft salty and siezed beyond repair. i have my eye on a 1971 Johnson 20R71S for sale $150 supposedly runs. May come with what looks like a Merc 110 or a Force. I see 110 on the black thin striped hood in the photos.
My question 1)- will the 5" extension and driveshaft etc long shaft parts off the 1968 fit the 1971 short shaft?
2)- the lower unit on the 1971 ,will it fit the 1956 or 57 Johnson 15 /18 hp?
      Thanks, Jim PSB

EDIT the other motor is a Merc 110. Both motors for $150

Unless there is a "gotcha" that eludes me, the answer is yes in both cases.

Agreed. I put a ’71- or ’72 Rude powerhead on a ’65 Johnson last year and it was pretty much a plug and play. As long as the driveshaft has four splines on top you should be good to go.

I believe that these are ALL interchangeable in the 15, 18, 20 and 25, from 1955 – 1973. 1955 – 1957 10hp, as well. The 5 bolt lower had a common cross over, even though the gear case and cavy plate was different in appearance. Like Mumbles said, just make sure the drive shaft has the 4 splines. Military and commercial models may be like 21 splines on the top of the shaft.

I don’t usually bead the flywheels, just clean them really good before painting with Builders Cast Aluminum out of a rattle can.

Looks like you painted the carb and plate also ?
                    It looks real nice! Edit

I like painting the mag plate and carb so I know they have been serviced with new parts and are good to go. Half the time I can’t remember what I did yesterday so painting the parts lets me know, especially when they sit on the rack for ages between uses.

What about the mag plates, do you paint those as well?
