Hello All,
I found a starter bracket (203736) for this motor and it seems to fit fine. I don’t see this bracket number in any listings. I ordered an after market starter for this bracket and the bolt spacing was off about a quarter inch. This brackets bolt spacing measures 2 1/4 inch center to center. The starter I ordered measures 2 1/2 inches. Would anyone out there know of a starter that would fit this bracket. Thanks for the help.
GlenOctober 29, 2020 at 4:30 pm #219631The 2-1/4″ bolt spacing on the bracket suggests the bracket was used on a motor originally equipped with a 6 volt starter. The 2-1/2″ bolt spacing on your new starter is the common spacing used on current 12 volt starters. Don’t know where you could find a 6 volt starter but you could probably find a good used correct starter bracket with the 2-1/2″ bolt spacing. I believe the bracket number you need is 317328 superseded to 126256. Here’s one link to a bracket and starter combination:

October 29, 2020 at 5:52 pm #219647It was advertised with these numbers which should have worked. 317328 308482 320012 304767 0304767
All the mounting hardware fit pretty well. Just hoping to find a starter to fit it. Seems half the stuff I buy anymore needs sent back arghh!
I should have checked the numbers when I received it.- This reply was modified 4 years, 2 months ago by Goman.
October 29, 2020 at 8:57 pm #219669Unfortunately, you can’t count on numbers provided by sellers, not that they are being dishonest, just not well enough educated. You shouldn’t have much trouble finding a starter and bracket for that engine, not that uncommon…
I don’t have a 1969 accessory book though…Please be sure your engine is a 1969 model though, did you post the model number?October 29, 2020 at 9:58 pm #219690Those starter brackets go for a pretty penny!!!
Marineengine.com has the accessories listing for 1972 and later years for the 18, 20, 25hp.
October 29, 2020 at 10:00 pm #219691October 30, 2020 at 8:15 am #219701The seller said it came off a 18hp. I don’t think the seller was dishonest just a mistake. The starter that came with it is a Auto-Lite MDH 4001M 12K. When I look that up I can’t make much of the information. The starter guy said it’s not worth fixin. The motor a Johnson 20R-70C is one I like to bang around in. Nothing I am trying to restore just trying to get the pull factor out of it Ha! If I could find a starter for it I believe it would work. If not I’ll just ship everything back and start all over. Season is about over anyway.
No Hurry.October 30, 2020 at 9:18 am #219707Ship it back, you have all winter to find a decent used starter and bracket at a reasonable price… We have to find a 1970 accessory catalog to get the proper part numbers for the starter and bracket….
October 30, 2020 at 10:20 am #219712I can relate. My right shoulder is starting to be bothered by starter rope pulling. No immediate discomfort but later on…. Seems it’s time for a starter on the snowblower too. I’d like to find a starter and bracket for my ’69 (?) 25 hp.
Do Prestolite and Auto-Lite starters have the same dimensions?
