This is a longshaft motor I’m getting running better for a friend from lack of maintenence. Had it running in a barrel , noticed the 5 inch extention on right side looking from the rear has a quarter inch hole and water was pouring out ,not under pressure. Is this supposed to have a plug in it? EDIT No hole shown in the parts diagram of the gearcase- 5 inch extention

It’s been nearly 40 years since I’ve looked at a long shaft model, but I’m assuming you are looking at a drain hole for the isolated drive shaft chamber. Short shaft models have one also, but it is up inside the outer clamshell housing. If I am correct, you absolutely do not want to plug it, as it can cause catastrophic damage to the powerhead if not drained off.

Post a picture if you are still concerned about it.

There are lots of holes in outboard midsections designed specifically to drain off water that could potentially freeze and crack your mid section castings.
Do not plug these holes up. What you are describing is probably one of them. You will see alot of them doing their job while running an engine on a hose or barrel.

Looks like a factory drilled hole. I’m not gonna plug the hole after hearing from you. My 1981 Johnson 25 has a hole that pours water like that also ,in a place that an owner would have to tear the midsection apart to drill. So I figured it was part of the design. Just wanted to check. Thanks , Jim
