I have the oppurtunity to buy a 1979 chrysler 6hp model 64 H9E at a good price. I wanted to know thought/opinions of this motor, all my motors are OMC so this would be my first chrysler. I had a gamefisher around the same age and it had a solid state ignition that was hard to get and was hoping this motor wasnt the same. Any info would be great. Thank you, Dave

I just got a 1980 model 64HOF. Probably very similar to yours although I cannot find your model number listed at boats.net. Mine has the old style WIKO/Prestolite points and condensor ignition that was used for years; simple enough. I would check that on the one you are looking at; ignition parts for the solid state models are very pricey by comparison.

These are the loopers; I have been told that they are great running motors; I am looking forward to running mine once I get a few issues resolved.

Mine takes the impeller #F525065-1….which sells for an astounding $125.00 from Mercury. Forget that; chrysleroutboarddude found that the OMC #0436137 is a direct fit and costs less than $20.00. I just installed it in mine; I simply shortened the drive pin a bit and it’s working great. Mercury should be ashamed to feel the neeed to charge so much for a necessary service part; fortunately there is an alternative.

They are basic motors; not even a thermostat. As with most all Chrysler derivatives…..they are a glorious example of very simple engineering and design. I think I’m going to like mine.

Thanks for the info, I did find out that its an export motor. I assume that means sent to another country.

I like them. I have one of the later GameFishers and converted it back to points. It runs great too. Very simple. Easy to work on and durable. I used one to frog hunt when I was a kid… tough old motor.

I have two of the 7.5 hp versions. They are my favorite classic motor. The 7.5 hp performs more like an 8.5 or 9.

The 6 hp can be converted to a 7.5 by swapping out the reed cage and the carb.

Keep watching eBay, or try one of Mumble’s Atom Modules.

I picked up a set of points for my 73 6hp from Laing’s last year can not remember the price but was not too bad.
It is the next one in line to get in the shop.

Export usually means it has all metric fasteners. My book shows the 64H9E as being "Special", the 67H9B & H9C are marked for export in 1979. . . 😆

Thanks for all the info. I was able to find points, do i set them using the woodruff key as a set point or is it the small mark that is close to it?
