      I’m looking to replace the plugs on this motor, and am curious re: whether to use the BRP recommended Champion QL82C, or the NGK BR6HS. The existing plugs are the Champions, and the top one seems to be somewhat fouled. In any event, it recently started acting up, and refuses to run at high RPM. I realize that this motor doesn’t even qualify as a classic, but know that some of you have experience with newer motors, and thought I’d ask.

        I would go with the NGK spark plug, I’ve worked on a couple of 9.9 Johnsons (same as the 15 except for carb) that just wouldn’t idle right with Champions and ran great with NGKs. Check again the number. The first site below equates a QL82C to an NGK BR7HS. Note that NGK plugs get colder as that number in the middle gets larger. I’ve noticed in the past there is some disagreement with heat range correlation between Champion and NGK depending on who’s chart you look at.

          Thank you, Dave. I really appreciate the info.
          I tried the NGK part finder, but couldn’t find a listing for this motor (model E15RERE).
          One other tidbit: I often run 32:1 oil mix with this motor, as I have a common tank for use with older motors that require a richer mixture.

            On my 76′ I run the hotter br5hs on the top and the br6hs on the bottom and also run 32/1 mix.

              I know guys use the NGKs in some of the early models from the 70s that had fouling issues, but plug fouling was never an issue with this 1994 model. I don’t think the heavier mix will cause fouling either….I would investigate the high speed problem, which will probably solve the fouling issue.

                In that NGK part finder chart, scroll to the 15 HP motors and even though your model is not there, note that other motors that use the QL-82C, list the BR7HS as the NGK replacement.

                I have two 1991 15s and one similar 1989 that came from a failed resort. They supposedly are 100 to 1 motors, but I run them at 50 to 1. I’ll be puttin one an a hydroplane soon and I’ll go with 25 to 1 because I double up the oil on anything I run on the hydroplane because they are running at rpms above the design point. I often have to go a heat range colder on the plugs for hydroplane use.
