I just traded a little Iron Horse kick start engine for a
decent looking (1952-1954?) 3012 Evinrude Lightwin today.
      I think the compression is okay, at 77 & 79 psi ?
Not sure who got the better deal 😕

Guy said it had spark, and technically he was correct,
but the coils are a cracked as expected.

From the parts diagrams, it looks like the impellers
are available, and affordable, as well as the
      prop shaft seal.

I’ve never had one of these "weedless" lower units apart.
Anything to watch out for, or pay particular attention
      to on these Lightwins?
      Thanks.

Nope, they are pretty simple. Don’t believe that old story that says you can’t get the drive shaft back in if you pull it out. Hold it hoizontal and it will slide in.
Make sure you lube the water tube grommet. If you put too much push on the tube, it may bend in the middle and rub through against the drive shaft.

Thanks for the tips Frank. Carb is soaking and the mag plate
is stripped. Maybe tomorrow I’ll pull the LU apart to
check the impeller and gear case.

I think you did OK on that deal and I have a kick start Iron Horse here I’d trade any day for an early Lightwin with compression numbers like those ones!

I’m pretty sure the first year three horse motors had different seals on the shafts, or at least the prop shaft, than later motors. The impeller should be the same one as used on the 5.5, 7.5 and 6 horse motors. They are quite attractive motors when they are all cleaned up.

Thanks for the links Crosbyman….. I didn’t have those bookmarked!

Mumbles, that sure is one pretty Evinrude!

I had to come in and see what coil connects to
what set a points. I made a nice diagram
of how the spark plug wire is routed on the
back of the magneto plate, but neglected
                to note the points.
It appears that the front coil (for the top cylinder)
is hooked up to the port side set of points……..
                back to the garage!

Great little motors. I’d change the impeller and check the oil in the gearcase for water intrusion. If there’s water, I’d pressure test the gearcase and see if the propshaft seal is leaking. There are only 2 oil seals on that simple gearcase, and the only reason to pull the head off the gearcase is if the propshaft seal is leaking. The gearhead easily pulls out after removing 2 (or4) screws. Oh, yeah, the crush washers on the drain and vent plugs could be missing or bad.

Lindy, I see that the prop shaft and drive shaft take the same seals,
                    which is a nice change!
By the looks of the old cracked up coils, I’m guessing the
impeller is from the previous century, and due to be
changed as well. Looking forward to seeing how it runs.
                    Thanks.

There is an O ring seal that goes on the
crankshaft end of the drive shaft. Keeps
moisture and dirt out to prevent this.
Over time they dry up, break, and fall out.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Tubs, thanks for the reminder on the o-ring.
I see there’s a big o-ring in the gear case
as well. I’m hoping it’s a standard size and
                        I have one in my O-ring kit…. don’t feel
like spending $9 for an o-ring!

I’m beginning to think the guy that got my
little kick start Iron Horse engine got the
better deal, as I ordered parts last night.
Including the new coils, that I had on hand,
I’ll be sticking $100 of new parts into this one.
Why do I keep doing this for an engine that
I’ll take out on the boat once, then hang
up on the rack for years?
