Had the coil redone. Points cleaned and set at .020, still no spark. Im thinking the condenser might be bad. Not sure how to test it.
where can I find a new condenser?
November 28, 2022 at 4:47 pm #269436condensers can be “basically ” tested with a capacitance meter and ohm meter ( some meter offer both options)
Unfortunately a ” good” testing condensers is not always…. “good” under load where it is subjected much hight EMF kickbacks from the coil it is attahed to compared to the small battery inside a VOM .
thankfully a ” bad” tested condensers is…. bad !
option 1…. just change it with a new one
option 2 ..rebuild the condenser if so inclined and you are ok with electronics & welding
see excellent articles on condensers from the western Region AOMCI M.Mohat articles.

November 28, 2022 at 5:06 pm #269440see links on condensers and testing VOM and capacitance meters are not conclusive tests. option #1… replace

.November 29, 2022 at 5:38 am #269455Tubs’ description and picture of the disassembled points are both beautiful and worth holding on to. You can think your points are clean; but all it takes is one tiny particle of the abrasive medium used to clean them, to keep them from working. Sometimes they won’t work, even when they are brad new. After cleaning and installing points, I usually will fold a business card in half and drag it between the point contacts, to get that last little bit of clean. Then, I test them with an ohm meter. (They have to be disconnected from the coil for this test.) When the points are closed, the ohm reading across the contacts should be zero, or at least exactly equal to whatever you get when you just hold the two meter leads together. Then when you open them, the reading should be infinity, “OL,” or whatever your meter reads when the meter leads are connected to nothing.
As for the condenser, in my experience, there is about a 95% probability that it is, in fact, “bad.” I have an honest-to-God magneto analyzer and have tested many, many of them. Even if you have the “capacitance” test feature on your meter, it means very little if it passes that test. The real test is “leakage and short,” which can only be done with a real magneto or condenser tester. It is much easier to just assume it is junk. Many will differ on this site; but the reality is that you will find that virtually any modern automotive or marine condenser will work in place of what you have, for the duration of what we, as hobbyists, are likely to use the engine. All the condenser has to do is physically FIT on the magneto. If you are going to run the engine for hours on end, or if someone’s life depends on the engine, then by all means, get the right value condenser.
Long live American manufacturing!

November 29, 2022 at 2:35 pm #269471i rigged up a 6 volt light to test the points. closed the light on, open the light off. so I figure the points should work.
maybe Im wrong, but still no spark.
November 29, 2022 at 2:39 pm #269472i thought the condenser had to match the coil.

Ultimately, it should. However, the difference between common modern condensers is so minimal that it doesn’t seem to affect run quality any, in my experience. For instance, I have never found a “correct” replacement for Bendix mags on Mercurys, but when when I just pick a Chevy condenser that fits, they always run fine. I have done this other times, with other brands. Do what you want; I’m just sayin’….
Long live American manufacturing!
November 30, 2022 at 7:10 am #269509actually m.mohat in his excellent article indicates that the value can vary quite a bit … on a longer term basis if you plan working oldies his condenser test box works very well to test for leakage in condensers by submitting them to a minimum of 250 VDC.
. his basic model uses few parts and is easy to build.
