TD20 is 100% apart, degreased, cleaned, stripped and will be ready for paint shortly. I have ordered the correct paint color (rattlecan) from Vintage Outboard Paint.
The question is do I add a coat of clear?
Were they manufactured with the clear? ( Something tells me there was no such thing back then?)
If not, I assume adding the clear gives the paint resistance to weathering and maybe fuel/oil?
Sea King is much further away, but same questions there?
Thanks!

Pretty sure they were not originally CC.
Not sure how fuel proof the paint from Vintage Outboard is,
but I’ve put Duplicolor Engine Enamel Clearcoat over it,
and had no problems. I’ve had good luck with Duplicolor being
fuel resistant.
I’ve also put CC over decals to help protect them.
I’m sure it would look more original without the clear though…..

October 12, 2023 at 6:32 pm #281573I’ve heard great things about the duplicator, thank you. I think I’m going to do that.
Thx again.
BTW – I looked it up, the automotive industry didn’t start using two-stage paint until the 70s, so there’s that.
I do want a little more protection than a rattle can would give though…

I have applied several spray can clear coat’s
over paint and then put gas on them to see
how resistant to fuel they are. This 1K Clear
is the most resistant to fuel I have found in
a spray can without a hardener. If I quickly
wiped off any gas there was no damage but
if left on for an extended length on time gas
will affect the finish. Second was Rust-O-leum
Custom. It also showed no damage if you
immediately wiped off any spilled fuel but if left
on it will affect the paint sooner than the 1K.
Just have a cloth handy to wipe up any spills
when filling a tank. Notice the Rust-O-leum
says “Lacquer”. Not sure about the 1K. You
should always test when mixing types & brand’s
of paint as well as if a clear is compatible with
your decals.
