On the 55 model, is the lower crankshaft seal prone to failure as it is in the 56 models ? My parts book is confusing me because I think there is a change after a certain serial number. I’ll include a pic of the serial number. Thanks.

Hmmm, thought it was the 56 models that had some issues with a plain seal in the crankcase… I don’t have a 55 parts book so I can’t help much. Does the parts book spell out the differences and which style your engine uses?

I believe the early 55s used an O-ring seal up to serial number 12000 or 13000 and changed to a lip type oil seal on the motors after that number.

1955 was a bad year also. Early production just had an o-ring, and I really don’t remember the details on that except it wasn’t good.. There was a mid-year change to the troublesome 303804 that killed so many 1956’s. I’m not sure of the serial number for the change 13,000???

I finally found my 55 parts list, and the seal change was at serial number 13000 and above.

Well my serial number is below the 13000. I’ve changed the seal in my 56 15 hp and my 58 12 hp gale. So is the o ring just as easy to change?

Probably easy enough to swap out the old O-ring for a new one but don’t know if you can swap in the oil seal in it’s place if the oil seal design also involved changing the block casting.

If the o ring is there that’s what I’ll put back in. I’m sure your right and the seal won’t replace it. Maybe the o ring was better anyway!! All these changes were not always good ones!
