I suspect the  ground wire on the mercury switch (glob) would either read  full 12v …..with  the switch being OPEN and  being the highest resistance point in the series cct  back to the solenoid and START key position  (ohms law).

or  would read 0 volts  as it becomes the ground referrence.   for the coil when the switch  closes to grd.

needs to be tested I guess.

John, it’s 3.00 AM ĥere, but l will make one small comment. You have a car solenoid, going by your previous tests.

The solenoid you want is Sierra #18-5807.  or OMC #0378444.  Link to both of them below.   As Frank explained – they look same as the Ford part but are wired different inside.

Here is the correct wiring diagram for a 1957 w/ generator kit. Simply ignore the stuff related to the gen.
            The car solenoid won’t work.

              Hi Frank,

Yes, I knew that this solenoid was for a car. I just didn’t have enough information at the time of purchase to know that it wouldn’t work for my application. I knew the ARCO SW081 was the direct replacement, but getting one was over a week lead time so I just went to O’Reillys hoping for the best.

Thanks for the updated drawing. I ordered an ARCO SW058 last night based on a few posts I found on this site, but I have a feeling even that one is wrong so I’m going to cancel it and just wait the 9 or 10 days for the correct one.

Thanks again for the new diagram.

              Best Regards,

Correct (Sierra Marine) solenoid for your motor. OMC #378444. Note the coil is NOT connected to mounting/ground strap.

                  Thanks Frank,

I cancelled the SW058 order and ordered this one. Paid a few extra dollars to get it here early next week.

                  Thanks again for the assist!
