I found a NOS set of reads from Marine engine to replace the garbage ones that were in my rde 19. When I receive them there’s a bunch of surface rust on the reeds, see the pictures attached. Do you guys think this is a concern? I took a Q-tip with a little WD-40 and rubbed trying to get the surface rust off and it won’t come off completely. I’ve already contacted them and they’re willing to let me send it back but if this is the best they have I’m wondering if I just keep it? Not sure how clean these things need to be to operate properly? Thanks in advance

not certain wd40 is a rust remover agent much… some stuff  is more agressive but  that said…those reeds will get all the oil protection they need from the fuel mix and if  they look half  decent and the price is ok I would keep them.

they look made of brass….   Brasso  cleaner  should polish  them up nice but  DON’T bend them out of shape !

Well, does Marineengine have another set to exchange them for?  If so, perhaps they can have a look at the replacement set.

If not, perhaps they will offer a partial refund.

I wouldn’t be to concerned about that minor rust, unless you feel there may be rust preventing the reeds from sealing completely.

I would just use the WD40 on them, or perhaps some OMC engine tuner, just be sure to spray them with oil afterwards.  You could dismantle the reeds and clean them with some scotch brite pads, but you need to be very careful to reinstall them exactly how they were to begin with, don’t flip them over.
