I’ve been barrel testing out my 1953 5D10 Gale / Hiawatha 5hp that
I went thru head to toe, and now trying to fix a few issues.
One issue, or perhaps non-issue is the water discharge.
I see very little water discharging from the exhaust relief slots,
and usually only see it when it’s idling. Most of the hot water is
oozing out of a 3/32" gap where the lower unit mates to the
transom mount, as shown in the photo.
There doesn’t appear to be anything missing, such as a washer, etc.,
that would fill this gap and force all the water to discharge out
      of the exhaust relief slots.
Does anyone have a 5D10 Gale product with the neutral shift?
If so, does yours also have a 3/32" gap ?

The carb high speed adjustment needle is "sloppy". Believe I ended up with some
homemade packing, o-rings and nylon washers perhaps, but it’s
      not working out.
      The packing number is 550-259
References to it on the Net say it’s leather packing
      Anyone find a suitable replacement?

Thanks as always for your wisdom!

Yeah, they slobber water out all over in that area. It’s all the same water. The one I had slobbered out more when steered around for reverse.

I make my own packings from an old leather belt (yes the kind you hold your pants up with). Punch a 1/4" hole in it, put it over the needle & nut, and trim the O.D. more or less to size with a scissors. Then sand it to round (still on the needle) on my belt sander. Better than the ones you buy.

Thanks for the reply Frank. I "think" I got all the bugs out of the
Hiawatha today, i.e., neutral shift appears to work now, oil leak fixed,
etc.but haven’t been able to barrel test it yet.
My test barrel 2"x6" motor mount developed a nasty crack.
Didn’t want Hiawatha to become a "bottom of the barrel" outboard!

I like your leather belt "packing" idea. I was thinking about leather
shoe laces and making little packing rings but ended up with three
R-03 O-rings, a spacer, and washer. Not sure how long that will last though.

Update- I removed all doubt, "I am stupid" 🙂
I’ve had the lower unit off the Hiawatha three times in the
last two days. It just wasn’t pumping enough water and the
longer it ran, the less water it pumped, or quite pumping
all together. Yesterday when I had the lower unit off I put
it in a bucket of water with a discharge tube in the pump to simulate
the height of the powerhead. Spun it with a drill, and water did
pump out the tube, but not with a lot of enthusiasm. I assumed
that’s all she’s good for, but took the pump apart and looked at
the new impeller……. looked good. When I ran it
today it pumped water like a 100 year old man at the urinal,
            then dribbled down to nothing.
I took it apart again thinking perhaps the hub of the impeller spun,
but it did not appear so. I re-assembled the pump, but didn’t mount
it in the lower unit. This time I made a jig with some wood scraps
to hold just the pump with driveshaft and the test discharge tube, in a bucket.
This time when I spun the pump with the drill, water shot seven feet
in the air. I thought "Old Faithful" let loose.
Then it dawned on me to look at the intake screen closer 🙁
I had wire brushed the exposed part of the screen and blew air
thru it during overhaul. This was obviously not good enough!
I could not blow and brush the blockage out today. I’m thinking
a lot of it is dandylion fuzz. The other day so much was blowing
around I thought it was snowing! I had to drill out the aluminum plug
that was holding the screen it. Think I’ll look for some courser screen
to make a new one. Suppose I need to drain my test barrel and
            start over with clean water!
I’m looking forward to the next time I run it to see if I can redeem
            myself!
Hope your outboard adventures went better than mine today, lol.

Dandelion fuzz!! How are we supposed to guess that? Well I suppose that is kind of like the stuff they used to sell as radiator stop-leak. Thanks for the education.

I also overlooked the pickup screen on my first gale. I was able to clean it with a small brush.
