While stripping down the magneto for cleaning, after I removed the two
coil attachment screws, I noticed quite a gap between the coil’s
horseshoe’s laminations (that the coil sits on) and the pads on the mag
plate. Looks like it was putting a lot of stress on the horseshoe lams.
I don’t believe I lost any spacer, etc.
Should I put a spacer of some sort on each side?
Not sure what metalurgy I wouild have for spacers, that would be suitable as to not interfer
with the Yen and Yang, or flow of electrons!

In general lamination stacks are easily distorted as they are made of thin layers loosely attached to each other. So I would look first for distortion there. If in fact the stator plate is distorted, it might be wise to use shim washers to avoid stressing it. I don’t think it would matter from an electrical point of view what you use, as it won’t be part of the magnetic circuit.

Thanks for the reply. I guess as long as the coil itself isn’t stressed it should be okay.

The laminations are coated with dielectric paint to hold down eddy currents (AKA Foucault’s currents) which reduce the output of high Frequency transformers (coils). Spacers may be made from iron shim stock, but should be also coated with this dielectric paint as they do become part of the magnetic envelope.

Learned a new word today. I’ve heard of Ed, but never Mr. Foucault. Will have to look him up!
The whole center of the mag plate was covered with, what looked to be a varnish substance.
It was half gone, and now “all” gone to pretty it up.
I was just pondering if I, or a previous owner, lost shims under the coil.
Probably never was any, but that gap looked odd.
    Thanks.
