My boat came with these cables and they work although they are tight because they are too long. 12 feet long. I tried to order from a Merc dealer but they are NLA. He gave me a part number 850716A8 but when I looked it up they were 18 feet long. Any help appreciated finding a pair of 8 foot cables. Thanks Slim

I’m not a Merc Guy, and I may be wrong, but I think the number after the "A" denotes the length. So A8 should be 8 feet and A18 is 18 feet. Whether or not these are the correct cables for the control, I admit I don’t know.

Your MErc is a 1962. Teleflex makes a good line of aftermarket replacement cables at reasonable prices. For Mercury, they claim their "CC179XX (600A type)" fits Mercs from 1965 up. For your 1962,, maybe you can still adapt the ends to your motor using some of the hardware you have. Here’s a link and click on the model number for photos. Unfortunately, the shortest are 10 feet. I have used several of their cables for pre-1979 Johnsons with great results:

The control end of the cable is the size of a piano wire and slides through the gear in photo 1. It then slides through a small barrel and is secured with a set screw inside the gear. If the cables shown are thin enough I would have to grind off the edge of it to fit into the gear. I did see a kit for $89 that includes everything. I’ll keep looking. Maybe I should place an ad on our site.
