I think that from looking at your picture you have one of the newer versions of Thunderbolt with a switchbox,  They are better than the earlier Phasemaker versions.  Still….if yours needs ignition repair….the components are rather pricey.

Other issues common with all the smaller Mercs of that vintage are lower unit seal issues .

        Very nice running engines however.

thanks fo info…  the asking $$ is 100 CDN …it would be easy to spend even more if the ignition system is defective…If I go for it ….     i’ll at least check for sparks.  visually the whole engine looks very clean.

I have  a nice 4hp with phasemaker ignition  on my rig and to be honest it is a fine running engine. one cyl, one set of points  that fires on closure.  it runs all day long with no

hick-ups  and a lot cheaper on fuel than my 9.5hp

The single cylinder Mercury engines with Phasemaker seem to fare better when it comes to stator failure,,,,,and it is rumored to be because the singles do not use a kill button.

If you have a Phasemaker Mercury……stop it with the choke.

OK I picked it up  for $100 cdn    crossing fingers as this is my winter 23-24  project. Couple  flaws .. missing a transom clamp and pad (big bolt presently)  and the keel has 1-2 inches missing which  I’ll  reshape or get  soldered if not to expensive ( possibly more that theengine 🙁  ) and if  the motor is  in working order……  after I am done  fully inspecting and refurbishing.   Needssome paint touch ups Merc Black

In any event it is a ” time spender” for me during long winter days  … just to keep me busy   day dreaming of  fishing days to come.

if anyone  has a spare  handle and clamp…drop me PM  🙂

happy days are back 🙂  I have enough E&J’s in the shed

Good motors, easy to work on, I’ve had 3.5,4,7.5,9.8 Mercs. In my book it’s the best fishing motor ever made. I got a 14ft Alumacraft Model A, anyone of those engines could plane that boat. I picked up a spare motor just for parts, lots of parts on those smaller mercs interchange with each other. There is no comparison to the Johnson. Gene.

agree …my  second  motor  in 1970s or so was a 9.8 till I sold it years later.  Currently  running a 4hp on my rig (great troller)    I got a sailboat 4hp and a 3.9hp in the shed waiting to go for a swim….and now  this 7.5hp  project.

I just need more boats and time
