Went up river around 20 min wide open then it died seemed hot. Idled about 15 min after for awhile then it locked up wouldn’t turn over. I noticed it was peeing ok but it was also peeing out of the side of the motor, he said that was ok?. Fished for a couple of hrs or so then went back and it run good. I told him one of you guys would know what to look for.

Peeing out the SIDE of the motor, "ALSO?" This is a 3 cylinder seventy with a clam cowl? It should only pee out the back.

If the impeller is more than two years old, it needs to be replaced, NOW. A lot of times the hub of the impeller will separate from the rubber. Sometimes they will even seem to pump okay at idle, when that happens but not at speed.

"Peeing out the side"……If there is a hole in the cooling system, it is possible for the water to dump out at that level and not make it to the top of the block, frying and locking the top cylinder only….

Third thing is that the early threes liked to cook the top cylinder from pre-ignition or detonation. I was once told this was because the cranks were ground wrong but since you time on #1, that never made sense to me. Anyway, they certainly cooked a lot of top cylinders, despite good oil and a good cooling system.

I would do a compression check on the motor, before I did anything else. You should see 130 psi or above on all three and within 10% of each other.

These are all just thoughts based on my interpretation of your description.

Thanks BillW. While idling with the cowl off and seeing it peeing out of the port side of the motor before it locked up didn’t seem right to me but he said he’s seen it before while running it at home…some kind of pressure release? I remember him saying he cleaned up and got rid of some unneeded wiring awhile back. Next time I’ll be strapping me ole 6hp Johnson on the back just in case. It’ll get you where you need to go.
          Thanks again.

The poppet valve, which is a cooling system pressure release, is on the port side of the engine. However, water is only going to come out there if the rubber diaphragm that controls it, has a hole in it. Water should not normally come out there. If you have a fresh water-only engine, that should be pretty easy to change. Salt water, you may run into frozen bolts.

"Clean up unnecessary wiring?" ON THE ENGINE????? That sounds scary to me…..Mercury would not have put any unnecessary wiring anywhere!

Again, with any three cylinder 70, the very first tool I would always pick up was the compression gauge.
