Found a place that sells 7mm copper spark plug wire that is unshielded says it is for old Rotax motors. Will this work on my 50s 5.5 7.5 outboards? Thanks Russ…

When you say “shielded”, are you referring to the braided metallic covering that was used on military engines? I can’t see using that stuff on outboards. For one thing, it is stiff. For another thing, it is troublesome for leakage through to the shield. We saw a lot of it back in “The Day” on military surplus engines, and usually replaced it with unshielded wire because of the leakage problem.

BTW, the purpose of the shield was to prevent RFI, or Radio Frequency Interference, which was vital in military communications. For civilian use, it was replaced with carbon core wire, found in cars even today.

Just looking for some good 7mm copper strand wire . This is priced at $1.18 a foot. And is advertised as 7mm copper strand unshielded spark plug wire for old Rotax motors . Thanks Russ…

Remember Boatfix.com? I ordered 1 thermostat and got 1 bag of thermostats. So then I ordered 1 foot of 7mm plug wire. I got 1 roll. I guess they weren’t schooled on unit of measure.

1 more. I called the local Merc Dealer looking for a shift shaft seal for a 110. The snotty guy on the other end of the phone told me “well they come in a bag of 5” (or ten , I quite don’t remember) I said, “if I have to buy the bag , I will”. Went to get them and the the summer help kid sold me the bag for the price of 1. Whit the price of parts, sometimes you get a break.

Most good auto parts stores should have 7mm metallic wire in bulk for around 1$/foot. “Packard 440” used to be sort of a standard but I haven’t seen any lately. I would not use resistance (ignition noise suppression) wire on an old outboard unless there is an actual interference problem.
