      A newer outboard question on tillers that I have never had apart.

      I am working on an Evinrude Yachtwin that seems to have been "Mickey-Moused" for throttle control. It’s a 1985 Model E8SRLCOB that has great compression but like every sailboat motor I’ve ever done, the darn driveshaft was stuck in the powerhead. Got that apart and then started looking at the tiller to figure out what was going on. These tillers were used on the 4.5’s through the 9.9-15’s and maybe others.

      It seems like someone made the throttle a push pull mechanism and got rid of the twist part of it. The grip was screwed to the stainless sleeve that has the cable connected to it. I’m wondering what parts I’m missing or if anyone attending Rocky Hill next weekend has one for a reasonable price that I could pickup?

      I can take some pics later if that’d help you see what I have but I’d like to see some pics of a complete handle that is apart if anyone has them available.

        That push/pull cable system can be a royal pain, not to mention EXPENSIVE to repair…Kinda hard to tell just what you have/need without seeing some pictures.
        I will try to bring what you need to Rocky Hill, once we figure out just what pieces you need…

          Try looking on marineengine.com for their exploded view of the tiller. Gives you a good idea of what you need and new part prices if you want to go that way.

            Those diagrams are good but for items like this I always seem to have a hard time. Never taken one apart which also doesn’t help. Here’s a couple pics of what I do have. My guess was a sailboater messed with it or had it Mickey Moused to stay at a constant throttle so they could steer with a rudder. Sailing was never my thing, need to have an outboard!

            You can see the sharpie marks that indicate a push pull motion to throttle the engine.

              OK, yes, you are exactly right. Someone took the time to machine that nice collar to replace the throttle grip and helix. I’m assuming you can pull that sleeve in an out to advance/retard the throttle. Depending on the year of your engine, there was also a stop button at the tip of the original throttle grip. So, I’m not sure how the engine is shut off now, unless you just pull the sleeve out completely to retard the timing enough to shut the engine off.

              Needless to say, there were a few changes to these pieces over the years, so it is important to research using your exact model number. The important piece is the throttle cable itself. I am assuming it is not jammed because you can move that collar back and forth easily. The rubber casings tend to rust and kink as well, so you should inspect it closely before making further investments in repair parts. Like everything else, these stupid plastic pieces and the stop switch are way over priced, the cable price is ridiculous as well. Used tiller assemblies on ebay usually command big bucks as well.
              Let me know what year you engine is, will do my best to bring some pieces to Rocky Hill that might help out.

                I’ll bring the tower with me, it’s all apart at the moment due to the driveshaft issue. Yes, the sleeve moves the cable if you push or pull it. The engine has a stop switch that’s been wired into the front of the cowling, sailboaters! It does look like the list you provided is what’s missing. The model of this engine is E8SRLCOB and serial G0476551 which makes it a 1985 engine from what I found. They are way overpriced for what they are and same goes for buying a tiller handle off eBay, they’re ridiculous. The cable works fine, it’s just all the correct setup parts you mentioned are gone, always something on these things, people really butcher them up sometimes!

                I’ve got a blue 98 Silverado and will be displaying a PR and early model 156 Evinrude Speeditwin. Those are NOT for sale! Ha

                  Look after that cable really good!

                  The last one I bought killed a $100 bill. So will a kill switch unless you mount a cheepie on the front cowl!

                    I can only imagine about the cable! It’s good for the time being, welded one once to repair it because of price! Kill switch is wired into bottom cowl, only part of the conversion someone did that looks halfway decent.

                        We never caught up it seems. I had the Johnson PR and Model 156 Evinrude Speeditwin displayed up towards the building. Do you have an entire handle I could grab from you? I totally forgot about bringing the tiller handle assembly I had which would have given away where I was parked!

                        I was in the Blue 98 Silverado Z71.
