when I pulled the prop on my winter.. MQ there was a “used” plastic ring between the prop and the gearcase housing to fill in the space (about 3/4 inch wide) . kind of a spaceer ring to fill the void between the prop and gearcase

I can not find that that part on any diagrams from 1964 onward ???

      anybody ever see one ???

        I’ve never come across one.
Not on the four I’ve spent time on.
Isn’t on my parts list either.
        Is the prop original?
I’ve been known to do some funny things to make something work, and I always think about what the next guy to get the motor (or house) is gonna think.

Not familiar with your outboard, but I had a Mercruizer that I had pulled the prop from & I thought the same. It was monofiliment
fishing line that gotten twisted up between the prop & gear housing.

prop is the regular plastic version (seen on other 9.5’s) 8.5 x 8

this a 1965 MQ which does not show up on the marine.com place they list a 1964 and a 1966 MQ but no 1965 MQ

p.s. no it was not monofilament 🙁

                It’s a plastic propeller?
All of mine have been aluminum. That seems odd to me that yours is plastic.
Like a trolling motor propeller plastic?
In the words of Jim, “I think somebody has been monkeying around with this motor!”
But then again, my experiences have been with the Evinrude versions.

Also, that space shouldn’t have to be taken up. The forward force is on the pin.
Like the backwards force is on the prop nut.
How big is that mysteryplastic ring?
                  What color is it?
                  Hmmmmm

unfortunately I chucked it weeks ago ( it was in bad shape) …………it it was white ….about 3/8 wide and 1.6 inch inside diam. enough to hide the gap between prop and gearcase

prop is a 3 blade identical to aluminum props but made of hard plastic .. I actually filled in some edge nicks with some JB weld to smooth it out a bit 🙂

anyhow the motor will survive without it but I would have reinstalled one . who knows maybe it was someone’s invention to hide the gap

Perhaps it was some sort of fish line cutter/protector accessory…
