Sorry if this topic has been discussed already.

A friend is looking for a motor for daily use, and I remember something about certain years of motors to avoid because of problems with the ignition systems.

If I am not off base with this, please indicate those years and I will pass it along to him.

      Thanks,

Avoiid 1974-1976, the first three years of production with the "low tension" ignition system. The best years were the late 70s-mid-80s, before the plastic carbs….

Looking at the ignition parts diagrams,Starting in 1977 Evinrude introduced the CD 2 electronic ignition on this series motors ,as I noticed my friends 1977 Evinrude 9.9 had this CD . Please correct me or clarify if I’m wrong Fleetwin, you know this series extremly well .

            All of them!

Get a good ol’ 18 and reliability will not end

            Smaller horsepower like the 9.9?

Get a 1955 – 57 10hp so much cheaper to get parts for, when something breaks. 😎

You are correct, the first year for CD2 was 1977, so they are fine. Avoid the first three years: 1974,1975, and 1976

I totally agree with this answer.

Did the 1979 have CD ignition? My dad had one of those when I was in my teens. I think that was the best motor he had ever owned. We ran that thing hard and I’ll bet he never even replaced the impeller.

All years have CD ignition, except the three listed, 1974, 75, 76.

Does this apply to all the 18’s throughout the years?
