A-70 gearcase lube

Want to change gearcase lube in 1934 johnson a-70. Just dont want to take the wrong screws out. I have lubriplate 105

I would think you’d fill in the plug in the front cone, and use the plug
on the side, just above the prop shaft level, as the vent.
The plug marked drain is most likely a water drain.
Hopefully someone will know for sure!

The top one is indeed a water drain.

I find that with my K-70, I have to top off the lubricant a couple days after filling the gear case — after it sits for a while and finds its way through all the nooks and crannies.

When I was young, my father used steam locomotive grease, which was so thick he had to remove the front cone and pack it in from there. I imagine my grandfather did that too, which is why so many of my grandmother’s wood spoons are missing 🙂

I’m guessing it’s getting tough to find steam locomotive grease any more, lol

If I remember right the front nut is the lock nut for the center bolt for adjusting the gear lash or bearing spacing. If it was me and not had it apart I would take it apart to clean everything then put it back together and use the two plugs on the side using them just like newer motors for oil but use your grease here
