Every Quicksilver gear case that I return to an owner gets filled with #0, Lithium soap, EP grease. It is a very thin grease, and flows easily thru the unit. The EP additive, (Extreme Pressure) is similar to that which protects the gear sets in automotive rear ends. Mercury’s Special Gear Lubricant was a #0 grease. NLA from Mercury Marine. I purchase the lube in 35 pound tubs, and have used as much as 70# per year. An acceptable, commonly avalable grease is John Deere’s Corn Head Grease. It is not Lithium based, but it is #0, and is pretty good at protecting after water intrudes. I beleive the Quicksilver cases hold about 2 ounces of grease. I suggest they be lubed after bing used, and before storage. Tail cone needle bearings require thicker lube (#2) and if the seals are good should be lubed about every 8-10 racing heats. Have fun boating. R.T.
