      I think the 40 had a two-piece gas tank with a seal. Larson’ should have one.

        I have a Martin 45 with the 2 piece fuel tank that was given to me. It had the tank sealer in it already. Had to take said tank apart to remove the sealer. That was along with the fuel line, fittings, shut off valve, float, bowl, main jet, etc, etc that also had the sealer attached. Replaced the tank gaskets with new cork gaskets and it was good to go without the sealer. I think the cork rots away after so many years.

          I think you will like the motor when you get it running. I had one and it was quiet, easy to start, idled down very nicely, light and easy to carry around….an all-around nice little motor. The only real downside is needing a lot of oil in the gas.

            I resealed a Martin tank a number of years ago (in 2005, to be exact). At the time, somebody recommended pro-seal part number FPS890-20Z from http://www.wicksaircraft.com Of course, you have to take the tank apart and clean everything. Worked very well for me. I guess if it’s good enough for an airplane, it should be ok in a lowly outboard.

            BTW, my Dad had one of those that he bought new when I was just a tad. He had his tank seam welded. Still leaked and also rubbed the flywheel. But we got about a zillion hours of fishing out of that thing, leak and all.

              Played with this one some yesterday. It is easily the most expensive motor I have that doesn’t run. Nothing is cheap on a Martin. At this point, I have about $150 in this on plus what I paid for it. sheesh. After new gaskets, the gas tank is no longer leaking so good thing there. For some reason, gas is pouring out of the carb, maybe the float is stuck, this is a new problem. And, the pull cord broke on the 3rd pull. I started it with my drill and it ran ok except for the leaky carb. It heated up pretty fast though so I shut it down. I don’t see any cooling water blowing out anywhere. This thing is like going to the chiropractor. LOL I have to work on it a little at a time. I forget about the money after a few months and start on it again.

              Advice on the pull cord replacement and water pump?

                I’m going to have about $350.00 in a 75 Twistshift.
                Maybe a little more. About 200.00 of that will be going
                to Russ Larson but that’s because he has about anything
                you could want or need for these. His seal set is
                $50.00 but at $25.00 for the power head and $25.00
                for the gear case. I don’t think that is out of line.
                Impeller is $18.00. Not out of line for most 60+ year
                old motors if you can find one. I could have saved
                $45.00 by making my own gaskets but that’s for
                every gasket in the motor including the carb and the
                gas cap seal. Most of the motors I work on the only
                gasket I can get comes on the spark plug. He has LU
                gear sets from $30.00 to $40.00 and $50.00 for the 200.
                That’s $15.00 to $25.00 a gear. I’d be glad to pay that
                and more for some of my pre. WW-II motors but they
                aren’t even available. The problem with these is there
                isn’t a strong interest in them. I suspect that there will
                be little interest in asking for anything over $200.00
                for it. So getting to learn about them, repair it, and
                then to use it will justify what I spend. I haven’t need
                any special tools to work on it. I’m still weighting on
                parts so I haven’t started to put in back together yet but
                I don’t expect anything to be difficult. It has several
                interesting features and I’m really looking forward to
                using it this summer.

                  The carb float is brass. It’s not uncommon for them to leak at the soldered joint.

                    It was running well and the carb was functioning fine (from a remote tank) when I discovered the leaky gas tank. It was quite some time before I got around to working on it again and I stored it at a weird angle. Maybe I will get lucky (finally) and it is just stuck open.
