Did Evinrude ever make a kit to install an internal fuel tank on an 1984 Evinrude 4 HP? I’d like to convert mine to use on a canoe. Thanks Todd

Thanks I would be interested in any parts for this if anyone has some for sale. Has anyone ever converted one? I’d like to use the motor It’s real clean, but my canoe doesn’t have a place behind the seat to store an external tank.

If memory serves correct they did, and on a side note, Ive heard of ‘saddle tanks’ as accesories which mounted to these types of small motors on the exhaust housing. Anyone have a pic of one of these saddle tanks.

Would be nice to acquire one someday as an additionto my outboard collection of obscurities.

Picked up a JW 30" motor a couple of months back. Seen them advertised in 60’s owners manuals, but never actually seen one prior to acquiring this one.

              Found this in a 1990 Johnson catalog. Ultra 4hp. http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/johnson/broc … n.html#/30

I have a 1987 Evinrude 2.5hp with a factory saddle or ‘pannier’ tank. They made a 4hp vers I need of this motor too. I’m not sure if this could work with your motor or not, but the tank itself is pretty small and handy by itself. They aren’t real common pieces to find by themselves and I have seen a fair number of these motors without the tank. This is a picture of the saddle tank anyway, so you can see what it looks like.

Ben-How much gas does that pannier saddle tank hold? On the 76-79 2 and 4 hp’s I have the gas tank on top holding a quart. Looks like the saddle tank is way bigger, an improvement for capacity would be great. Problem is gotta have a fuel pump . the late 70’s 2 and 4 hp were gravity fed.

I’ll double check the pannier tank capacity when I get back home but it’s close to a gallon give or take a little. It’s definitely an improvement in capacity over a top tank. Yes, you do need a fuel pump. Also, the cap doesn’t seal the best and if the motor is tilted up with the tank in place it tends to drip quite a bit if it has much fuel in it. If all the gaskets were replaced it might not. You do still have to remember to close the vent before you tilt the motor.
