Is there a better screw better to use on the clam shell gear case?
The slotted screws that I have are all boogered up.
I was going to use a regular slotted screw plus a washer.
But the hardware does not have washer that will fit in the recess of the clam shell plus have a hole to fit the diameter of the screw.
Also the hardware store does not have a screw that has a shoulder (built in washer)
I’m hoping that you guys can suggest a screw other than slotted.
      Your thoughts?

There is a reason for the original screws’ design. When socked in tightly (use your hand impact driver), the washer head provides a seal that prevents leakage around the screw. “tightly” in this case means the impact driver as already mentioned. It also explains whey they are always buggered up—because people try to get them out with inadequate tools.

Hey, correct screws are available. Some even not too badly beat up.

There was a thread by Tubs that showed how to improve these damaged screw slots. As I recall he put the screws in a vice between two hardwood blocks and used a small punch to drive the displaced metal back along the screw slots. I have tried it that way and it does help. Also you could put an ad on this site as frankr says. You would surely find some used ones.

Hello, there it is by the man himself below:

Ever since Tubs posted that a few years ago I’ve been doing that to all the bad screws I come across. When working on other people’s motors I always take before and after pics and show them. just so it doesn’t go unnoticed.

If originality isn’t of concern, wouldn’t some of the hex head (allen wrench)
                screws work?

I thought of hex screws also but wouldn’t they rust fast and they would not have that shoulder (built in washer)

these would be nice if they had a shoulder (built in washer)

I am impressed with that screw slot rehab! Well done.
