It looks pretty good but it is cheap $$$-wise…so I don’t know what to expect. Works with pressure and vacuum……
It’s sold at a variety of sources like this one: (For $30)
http://www.enginehones.com/5270.htmlI’m currently making do with a home-made contraption made with a bicycle pump; it would be nice to have something more self-contained…..but I really don’t use it enough to justify one of the real pricey ones. Still; no point in just buying junk.
Any comments?
December 28, 2016 at 11:30 am #49844I’m lucky enough to have the two Stevens ones but what great idea to have both functions in one tool! I hope it works as you hope.
For what it’s worth, whatever vacuum tester you get, even the good ones, never succumb to the temptation of pulling vacuum in a gas line. The fuel will kill the rubber in the tool every time. It will do the job but be non-functioning the next time you need it.
Long live American manufacturing!
December 28, 2016 at 2:12 pm #49846Looks nice, except I’m not sure the scales are appropriate for gearcase work. It looks like the inner scale is PSI, correct? If so, there is very little movement between 0 and 10PSI, which makes monitoring leaks a little more difficult. Please don’t exceed the 10-16PSI limit for gearcase work, or you will overcome the seals ability to "seal". Yes, one tool being able to do both tests is very convenient. Certainly worth it if the price is right….But, keep in mind, that a low quality tester can introduce errors into the testing procedure if it has internal leaks. This looks like a quality piece though.

December 28, 2016 at 3:35 pm #49851Just out of curiosity, how much does this tester cost?

December 28, 2016 at 8:02 pm #49867Cool, surely seems worth any possible risk to try it out….You can order the threaded adapters that screw into the gearcase directly from stevens for a reasonable cost….

December 30, 2016 at 1:18 am #49920Garry….does that one supply pressure as well as vacuum? And; assuming it can pump pressure…..does it have a built-in valve that enables it to hold the pressure for awhile….allowing you to watch for a gradual drop?
