I have a restored Penn Yan Swift and looking for a 25 HP motor for it. I know nothing about vintage outboards so no idea which brands or models I should be looking for. I like the looks of the Mark 25 Mercury. Any ones to stay clear of? Also, what are the best places to find them? I live in the Florida Panhandle and would love to find one I could drive to pick up.

I assume that you would want something “period correct”? If so then whatever year your Swift is would be a starting point. Those were made for some period of time; I am not sure if an observer could tell the exact year of a particular one (yours) by looking.
I would think that the Mercury Mark 25 would be a great choice; they came in various colors so that could be your next choice. Another member posted a Mark 25 in “Copper Canyon” the other day. Not so common in that color.

Prepare to be boarded!
January 29, 2024 at 6:47 pm #284464I too suggest a Mark 25. Plenty of power & one of the two cylinder better gearsets. Paint it as you wish as many factory colors were offered.

Love the Copper Mark 25. Good to know these are pretty good motors and not just beautiful to look at.
What is the Evinrude model? That is gorgeous!

The Evinrude is a 1957 18hp. It is the motor that started my old outboard passion. It cost a ton of money to get it in this shape. It should be in the living room but I get overruled over that suggestion quite often.

You could look for the Mark 25E; Electric start.
