My cowl has some pitting so I’ll have to fill and sand before painting. Anyone care to tell me which filler is best to use? Thanks

I used common automotive putty you mix with hardener ( the simple putty without fiberglass fibers…) on my gas tank on a JW

Prep first by cleaning thoroughly with lacquer thinner etc…then prime it with self etching or epoxy primer…THEN fill with putty. I use fiberglass gel from the auto parts store. It expands with the metal well. Then sand and fair the tank. Prime again. Fix any issues missed them first time if need be. Then paint…etc.

Bondo or any other brand of plastic body filler is used for filling small dents while the polyester based putty is used after priming to fill any small imperfections or sanding scratches. Putty is designed to go on super thin and shouldn’t be used in place of filler.

I used 2 part Marine Tex to fill the dents in this Commander tank. It had three good ones in the back. Rough up the metal and use an old credit card to smooth. Sand and prime/paint. I buy the Marine Tex in the larger industrial size can. Works for all kinds of stuff.
