When stored, a plastic bag around the lower unit is good to catch any gear oil that may decide to leak. I have a few that like to do a few drips over the winter, but not bad enough to warrant a sealkit. Also good precaution if one that never leaked starts leaking.
DaveNovember 22, 2016 at 8:48 pm #47835Well, I live in Oregon and I am yet, to "fog a motor" and I have been collecting motors for 24 years. If one sits for any length of time, then pre-lubing the internals with light oil such as wd-40 or fuel mix works nicely.
November 23, 2016 at 1:21 pm #47893Dale, I recognize the last picture with the string around the prop shaft. That’s the Brooklure 500 I bought from you at Constantine. Incidentally, that gearcase still holds a seal, doesn’t leak or let water in. Who’d a thunk it?

November 23, 2016 at 6:34 pm #47919Yup that is the Brooklure! I had a L of a time getting that prop off. Lesson learned there, it is now part of my foggen and greasing and oilen at the end of the season! Hopefully you fixed that motors rattle.

November 24, 2016 at 12:17 am #47929Ya, that’s a good plan Dale. I haven’t had a chance to tear into that powerhead yet, but I plan to over the winter. Hopefully I get to it. I’ll make a video when it’s done.

November 24, 2016 at 12:58 am #47933As stated earlier, I don’t fog motors…..
I do occasionally let ’em watch a football or hockey game, or maybe a movie……. seems to work as good as fog….

He's livin' in his own private Idaho..... I hope to go out quietly in my sleep, like my grand-dad did..... and not screaming, like the passengers in his car...

November 24, 2016 at 2:59 pm #47958Better get them motors out of there.
Last ran this motor in 2004.
Been hanging on the wall ever since.
A good friend has one that is junk.
Wont run cause the main bearing are
worn out. Said he would like to get
another so I gave him this one. He
told me that it started on the 3rd pull.
Inside but not heated storage – never
fogged.A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
November 24, 2016 at 7:42 pm #47975Nice little motor, Tubs. I have the Elto .9hp cousin to it.
November 25, 2016 at 10:44 pm #48024Good idea on the kitchen timer Mumbles.. Your motors will be around for years to come so others can enjoy them.
I remember an old Mercury Tech rep that used to visit the dealership where I worked. We were discussing how a lot of boaters take care of their motors, or the lack there of. He said, ”If people would read their owners manual, and follow the instructions for maintenance, and proper lay up for storage, people would think we [Mercury] have the best products in the industry”. -
