Several valid approaches are described in this thread. I think mainly it depends on how original you want it to look. Elsewhere I have seen suggestions to REPLACE a transfer cover with a flat aluminum plate. This I would not do as I can´t believe it wouldn´t mess with the performance of that cylinder.

The pic of the early covers with a boss look as if they are intended to be drilled and tapped for one eighth pipe thread for a remote pump. Possibly this was an early Gale setup…

Possible impact yes but if the bypass cover empty volume of the unused quadrants are fill up or.. all with a simple 1/4 hole drilled in line with the pump would it matter that much compared to tapping for an nipple and hose back to the pump ??

Thanks for all your help so far. I am ready to order parts for this conversion and know where to get them.. In the mean time, I want to replace the water pump impeller and do a general tune up of ignition, cylinders, etc. Does anybody know where I can find repair and parts manuals for this 25 HP 1953/54 Evinrude Big Twin? Can’t find anything prior to 1955 on Ebay or elsewhere.

As AOMCI member you would have access to the johnson/evinrude manual 400 pages + that covers all you need from early 40s to late 60s repair wise 🙂

in the MEMBERS ONLY section under INNER SANCTUM… library Garry Spencer’S drop box for an easy download

Garry Spenser’s very fine repair manual (Evinrude Sv. Rev. 54 pdf) has 9 sections. All are there except Section V Lower Unit Service Information. I can’t win for losing.
