I’m looking for a “how to” on installing a cable and pulley steering for a friend. I searched the usual suspects and find no good info. If he was closer, I would just go do hands on., but he is not nearby. Anyone have a link to a good video or other instructions?
Not much good info out there. Everybody gets it wrong anyway. Especially the boat builders back in the day.
Ill be glad to share what i know so you can get it wrong in my way.. First tell me if any of the hardware is already installed. What kind of rope drum behind the steering wheel? Do both cables go down the same side of the boat or one cable down each side? Anything unusual about the boat or motor? Racing? Cables connector to front of the motor or to a tie bar on back of motor?
Good video in post #2. I would deviate from that a smidge, as I don’t like his use of turnbuckles. But you do need tension on the springs, so how to do that?
I cut little wooden wedges that insert into the “extended” (i.e. under full tension) springs. This way I can cable everything up “hand taught”, which gets the cable as tight as I can. Then, when the cables are all clamped up, the wooden wedges are removed and the cables are tight.
Thanks guys for the info and crosbyman for the AU video. future reference and maybe help for another , a friend shared an informative chapter on “cable and drum” remote steering in the book “Cheap Outboards” by Max Wawrzyniak. I good book to have if you can find one.
