I know on some omc carbs the gasket between the bowl and body has a hole for the idle circuit that closes check it if it has it. not a omc guy a merc guy.
June 8, 2016 at 6:15 pm #37924If you need the choke fully on to keep the motor running, it’s could be the well in the carb bowl is plugged up as everything settles here. The passage from the well for the the low speed circuit has to be clear to and is often missed when cleaning a carb. The matching circuit in the carb body has to be clear to along with the high speed nozzle. Also check the orifices where the tips of the adjusting needles fit in. Any gunky buildup here will cause your symptoms to. A good soaking in parts cleaner followed by blowing out with high pressure air will make it all good again.
Here’s the well and the low speed passage which must be clear.

June 9, 2016 at 1:41 am #37959Once again I appreciate all the great replies from everyone to my original post. The pictures of the carb bowl and internal passages are clearly illustrated from a members reply and I will check for any obstructions when I install the carb kit. Thanks to everyone for all the great information.
June 18, 2016 at 9:05 pm #38532Thanks to all the members for the replies to my carburetor question. I removed, cleaned, and installed new carb kit from Marine Engine. The old Sea Horse now runs and idles like a well oiled clock. I thought it had to be something simple as the engine had very little use from the previous two owners. I have attached a couple pictures of the outboard along with the original dealer sales brochure that came from the seller. Just love the color and styling of these old motors and may have to search for additional motors and start a collection.

June 18, 2016 at 9:33 pm #38539That’s a basement queen to the max. I am jealous now.
June 18, 2016 at 9:52 pm #38540Wow, what a beauty! It sure is a nice feeling getting something like that up and running again! Thought you might like this illustration to download and print.
post a pictureJune 19, 2016 at 7:41 am #38575Your example of a ’57 CD has to be as nice as it gets for an original motor. And it’s on a proper ’57 stand to! 😀
Don’t forget to use a 16:1 fuel/oil mix and switch the mixture knobs around. The small one goes on top to clear the choke knob. Heck, even I get them on backwards sometimes! 😳
June 19, 2016 at 11:03 am #38580Greenie, beautiful engine you have there! Those are getting harder and harder to find that clean. A true survivor. Follow Mumbles advice and use 16/1 fuel / oil ratio and she will run forever….
