I could use some input as to what year this cowl was made. It came with a motor stamped as CD-11, but it does not match the cowls of the other CD-11’s or the one CD-12 that I have. Fits the CD-11 it came with just fine.
Thanks,

(I could be wrong) This one appears to have been spray bombed with a darker shade of green at some point in its life, but other than that, it looks like the rest of them to me.

September 20, 2016 at 5:43 pm #44391I have a CD-12 with wing bolts. 😕 It has been repainted at some point so I’m not sure of the original trim color. It is white now but may not have always been. Of course, that engine has been rode hard and put up wet so who knows what may have happened to it along the way. ❓

September 20, 2016 at 7:10 pm #44401The wing nuts were used through ’54 and about midway ’55. They changed to the slip off type, as you see in mumbles second picture. The intake manifolds are different for each cover type used, as well. I think the later style covers were quieter as well.

I think you are right Dan. The silver trim was for the ’54 and earlier models, with wing nuts. Almost all the ’55 models I have seen were white trim and no wing nuts, but im sure there are some early ones out there from leftover stock from ’54
September 20, 2016 at 9:13 pm #44411Since this stirred up a little interest, and my question yet to be answered, here are some additional cowls from the other 5.5’s I am restoring. The first picture is the front of the original cowling which I am still curious as to it’s year of manufacturer.
The second picture is from my CD-12 (cream trim with wing nut attachment).
The third picture is of the cowling that came with one of my two CD-11’s.
Good point that over the years, pieces/parts may have been intermingled, but looking back and doing some forensic genealogy is half the fun. Again, the cowl in question looks like an outlier to me.
Oops, just previewed and pics are in reverse order, and just found where to attach picture comments. I’m a newbie, so I hope this post works!
