A single cylinder Champion of the "Blue Ribbon" style
joined the herd today, and I can’t find the model or
serial number on it. Anyone know where to look
      on these singles?

It looks like the 1946 2J Champion in Ben’s video with the rewind
      below the power head.

This site shows they made a 2J Deluxe and 1J Standard
in 1946 & 1947. What would be the difference? Rewind?

        Buc,
The 2J Deluxe has the rewind starter. The 1J Standard has a rope sheave on the flywheel and does not have the flywheel cover as on the 2J. If yours has the rewind starter, it’s a 2J. The 2J should be part of the serial number stamped on the tilt hinge on the transom clamp. Have fun with it. They are neat little motors. 🙂

Ben, Thanks. I found another YouTube video of Ben D., showing
a Champ 1J being a "rope start", and in watching his 2J video
again, I caught glance of his serial number, as shown in the photo.
Will have to check mine again tomorrow!

Forgot I had a photo of the 2J Champion (with a 4K 7.9 hp) from
the previous owner. Hopefully the serial number appears
with a little elbow grease, as it’s not evident in the photo like
          Ben D’s outboard.

            Buc,
Here’s is a pic of my serial number on the tilt hinge. I just took a screen grab of my video of my 2J after I realized it was visible. My motor has all the side covers on it and the number you’re showing on Ben D’s motor is not visible on mine with the covers on. I bought mine from Ben Dittmar at Tomahawk last year. I can’t get mine to idle quite as slow as his, but it’s close. Anyway, here’s where the 2J shows up on the tilt hinge.

Ben, the 7.9 hp in my photo has the model / serial number
where your 2J does, but I did not find it there on mine
              2J. Will look again today.
Guard your "blue knobs", I think I’m missing one or two, lol.

                Buc,
I will be guarding my blue knobs. 😀 I have seen plenty of these in rough shape missing the knobs. I’m very happy with the completeness of mine. I haven’t looked closely at a lot of these motors. It could be that they changed the location of the numbers for different years? I don’t know. I only have 2 Champion built motors so I’m certainly no expert on them.

Ben, I found the model / serial number in the same place Ben D’s was.
It’s not stamped real deep, so a little grease and dirt hid it well.

I found another apparent 2J on my rack….. at least it looks
the same and has the rewind below the power head.
According to my notes, it’s froze up, but It has the side covers,
and a gear case that’s never been welded, so a good parts motor.

Regarding the cowlings, it appears there should be a little cover
on the back side that hides the spark plug.
Anyone happen to have a picture of their "back side" of a J2 Champion?

Any digital J2 manuals "floating around"? Curious as to what it has
for coils, water pump impeller, seals, etc.
Also very curious as to how one replaces the rewind rope under
                  the power head!
                  Thanks!

                    Buc,
My 2J was lightly stuck when I got it along with the recoil being wound backwards. The rewind on these things is kind of a unique contrivance. It’s not terribly hard to work on but a little confusing being that it mounts below the powerhead. Everything has a way of seeming backwards. I’m sure this is how the person that worked in it before me managed to wind it in reverse. My piston came free with a shot of PB Blaster down the spark plug hole amd letting it sit tilted up to soak. Then with a little gentle encouragement with a wrench on the flywheel nut, it was moving again.

I never had to do anything with the magneto on mine so I’m not sure what it has for coils, points, ando condenser. My Champion built Sea Flyer has a Phelon mag. Not sure about the 2J.

Here is a picture of mine in the rack showing the seemingly elusive spark plug cover.

Thanks for the photo Ben, now I just need a scrap of aluminum sheet,
and the mold from the Champion factory to stamp out
                      a new spark plug cover!
Do you have to pull the power head to replace the rope?

Yessir, the powerhead has to come off to do any work on the rewind. One thing that will save you a bunch of trouble is something Hotrod told me when I was working on mine. There is a hidden screw that holds the powerhead on after you have removed all the ones you can see. There is a plug in the bottom of the exhaust elbow. It is barely visible in the last picture. Remove that plug and there is another powerhead screw under there. Thankfully my better judgement won out on the side of patience when I worked on mine and I didn’t break something. If you have any trouble when you get to the powerhead, send me a PM and we’ll talk through it.
