Just picked up a couple of engines.. Again. One of them was a ’66 Chrysler 9.2 hp. As usual, I can’t find any info on them on Google so I’m turning to you guys. What I’m looking for is:
Specs
Production years
"Reviews"
General information and so on. You get the idea.Anyone got something to share?
Thanks!
NikoApril 24, 2015 at 8:20 am #14627I owned a 1965 west bend / chrysler (change over year) 9.2 many years ago. it seemed to run well. that motor was carried forward about until the low profile chrysler 9.9 was debuted. i think you can find a sierra water pump that will fit that 9.2- i never had to change mine but Sierra does carry some chrysler pumps last i knew but i heard they obsoleted a lot of chrysler parts recently so you may have to find the sierra number and then hunt around on the internet.
IF your motor needs coils then try replacement OMC coils- on most of the older west bend motors the laminate dimensions were the same as OMC replacement coils so you could slide the bad coil off and then install an OMC coil instead of hunting down some much more expensive coil.
looks like the 9.2 was phased out in 1968. there is a lot of information out there on them if you google chrysler 9.2 outboard

April 24, 2015 at 8:39 am #14628Thanks! Well, I guss there is some info to be found but I’m not too good at finding it..haha.
Found the model number "9701" which makes it a 1967, not a 1966.
April 24, 2015 at 12:22 pm #14633The lineage of the motors goes like this, short version: Kissel brothers, a spin off of the Kissel automakers from early 1900’s started producing outboards in 30’s before WWII for Sears which sold as Waterwitch. In mid 40s, West Bend bought out Kissel and completed Waterwitch order. Soon after West Bend designed new motors and began selling as Elgins for Sears. This continued through 50’s until West Bend started to sell them under their own name. At some point in later 50’s Sears went to McCulloch and West Bend continued on their own until 1965 when Chrysler bought out the outboard division of West Bend. Chrysler ran from 65 to 80’s, sold to Us Marine boat builders becoming Force which quickly got bought up by Brunswick, the owners of Mercury. Force began making motors for Sears again under the Gamefisher name, mainly 9.9 and 15hp lowprofile motors you see into later 90’s also as Force. Force also had a full range of motors in various HP ratings. The fuel pumps on these Gamefisher (and similar Force motors) motors were the same back to the West Bend era as well as many of the water pumps.
I shied away from Chryslers until I picked up a 73 20hp. I find them to be of good quality but perhaps not as advanced technology wise as their competitors. I think their engineering philosophy must have been KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid (although not stupid) . My 20hp runs really smooth, has lots of power, and runs pretty quiet. I really enjoy running it. They are easy to work on and good quality SS fasteners and fittings always seems to loosen for me which cant always be said about others. I have also had some Gamefisher 9.9 and 15s. I was impressed at how well those ran as well. Great power and speed in a small package. I intend to find an early 70’s Chrysler version in good condition at some point. They are out there.
April 24, 2015 at 12:28 pm #14635We are lucky to have a very active member who enjoys making videos and repairing old Chrysler outboards and he is known as Chrysleroutboarddude. He has a You Tube channel and has many many videos of old outboards on boats. Ben, is very very knowledgeable regarding Chrysler outboards and is an excellent resource for repairs and finding parts. If, I am not mistaken, Mercury eventually bought out Chrysler and still sells a lot replacement parts.
Here is a list of you tube videos Ben has put together to help others regarding the Chrysler outboards of the mid late sixties and possible early 70’s. The video is of Chrysler 5hp, but is very very similar to the 6hp, 9.2hp and 9.6hp outboards.

I have a Chrysler 9.2 with a light on top…..It’s electric start, and it starts quicker than any other motor I own…..just touch the starter, and it’s running.

I have owned about four Chrysler outboards. All under 10 hp. They all run/ran very well,
Chrysler was innovative in reducing the motor parts count and designing control linkages.
They also produced the only loop charged outboard motor under 10 hpI will also add a hats off to Ben Dittmar he is truly "Mr. Chrysler Outboard".
July 31, 2015 at 11:04 am #21311Well, I dunno about that. How about the 4hp McCulloch? It was a looper. Maybe some Eskas too, I’d have to dig into that subject.
