      I’m assuming there is some wear on the original grooved lug side of the dog which is why you are flipping it around.
      Generally, these gearcases have been very reliable in terms of shifting and sealing. The earlier models may have had some issues partially due to corrosion build up around the shift lever causing it to be stiff, which led to only partial engagement of the clutch dog. Needless to say, this was more of an issue on salt water engines.

        The 3 gearcases I opened up this past weekend all showed little wear on the 3 lugs. One of these gearcases had a housing that had been completely beat to hell (not salvageable), yet the internals all looked to be in exceptional condition (nearly new). Good to know no harm no foul on flipping them over if necessary (none needed it, but by force of habit I reverse them if in there already if it looks to improve service life).
