John,
On the left side of the coil the picture shows a solderless connection. it looks like to me there are two wires comming out of the coil (to me) & the spark plug wire comming out on the right. That is why I asked about that, but my eyes are not as good as they once were. And yes rosin core solder is made for electroniucs, in fact you can buy a small tin of rosin flux to apply to dirty connectiona to help clean the connection. Never use acid core solder with wires. That is a weird looking coil to me but I’m used to Mercury & OMC coils. Before switching coils take your meter leads & install one lead on the ground terminal & the other on the sparrk plug coil terminal, you should have around 4 or 5K ohms. Set your meter on 10K ohms That winding goes bad first from running the motor with a disconnected plug wire. The coil makes the electrical energy but it needs to go somewhere to ground. That may blow a hole in the tiny wire & leave carbon behind which will show very high resistance or open winding. Unrelated but in D.C. relays you will see a diode between the coil terminals to delete left over current in the windings of the relay to keep the coil from blowing a hole in the windings. Same as a Magneto coil not connected & looks like a tiny hole on the outside of the coil arcing to ground because not connected to the spark plug terminal. Yes, I agree that coil has been hacked by someone too!
P.S. you can buy spark plug wire by the foot, no shipping by going to a neon shop & ask for “G.T.O.” wire by the foot. Neon transformers oupput 15,000 to 30,000 volts& this wire is stranded copper & works very welll for magnetos. Buy the Hi-Flex GTO as it flexes much easier for moving neon signs. GTO means “Gas Tube Only” Not “Pontiac brand, Gas Tires Oil” wire but can add “O” for outboards plus it’s 7mm diameter. I find easier to work with & comes in colors too.

Attached is a picture of what my coils look like. The picture with the braided wires (2) was posted by mumbles and is :
(his words) I think “this is a Pal/Ranger style coil and you can see the braided lead going to ground. The solder terminal has a similar lead.”
Yes, I have tested per your instructions and this coil is DOA. It has a positive lead (to the points) and a ground. 3rd wire is the high tension lead to the spark plug.
My other coils tests just fine. Thanks for the advice on getting a good solder joint down without too much heat to the coil.
Best Regards,
John Gragg
