      what should the compression be on a 1953 gale(hiawatha) 5hp?

        Some run ok at  high 60s  like a 9.5hp    … imho   look for 75-80 s  or more .

        the motor is  70 years old  and likely  lost  some  PSI  depending on the amount of TLC it got all these years.

        what  psi do you have ??      0 psi may indicate just a bad cyl. head gasket   or a  cyl.head that needs  a good polishing job

          my compression tester won’t seal because it will actually hit the piston head, need to grab another tester that won’t screw in so far
