I have a 6hp yamaha model 677 and I want to upgrade to 8 hp since there are the same engine block.
What I made : replace the carburetor and red valve with 8hp Mariner model 677 parts .
The result: engine runs like 6hp engine , no extrapower .
Do I have to change more parts, to change settings for other parts ?
Please advice me .July 3, 2021 at 9:28 am #241826What year is your motor? What is serial number of motor? I think that will help folks here help you. Do you have a parts list link to your motor.

July 5, 2021 at 2:50 am #241987It is dificult to find more information about this outboard, the year is betuin 1978-1980
Yamaha 6hp model 678, serial number 250142July 5, 2021 at 11:40 am #242000What exactly do you mean it still runs like a six? Same speed, same WOT RPM?
Manufactures used lots of small changes (economical) to get different horsepower ratings out of motors using the same block. Smaller carbs, restrictor plates, lower compression pistons and heads, port alignment on sleeved motors, and exhaust systems to name a few. Any of these will affect the motors maximum RPM’s. The 8 horse may also have a different gear ratio or pitched propeller than the six horse. Without parts diagrams of each motor for comparison, it’s a guessing game.
July 6, 2021 at 5:20 am #242052With 6 hp carb+ 6 hp red valve/ 8hp carburetor+8 hp red valve in the same conditions: 95 kg (my weight) , same propeller, same boat, I reached same speed (around 25 km/hour)
6hp carburetor main jet :76
8hp carburetor main jet: 78
as I wrote above ,it is dificult to find more information about this outboardJuly 6, 2021 at 3:06 pm #24208225 Km/hour (15-16 MPH) with a six horse? I wouldn’t argue with that! That might be the maximum speed the propeller can develop no matter how much horsepower is turning it.

July 7, 2021 at 3:25 am #2421318hp outboard use same propeller and I belive that the boat speed can not be the same.
Ther are somthing that restricts the engine to reach proper power, after I made parts changes.
That’s what I am trying to findJuly 7, 2021 at 10:37 am #242150If both motors use the same prop, then you have to find out what the maximum rated RPM is for each motor.
Are there any Yamaha dealers in your area? If so, they should have the specs or be able to get them.
