Crack or casting flaw?

Hello to all;
Do the pics show a casting flaw, or a crack, in the bowl of my model E, type 2 carb?
Not great photography or light, I know.
It was more apparent before I took a swipe at it with a shop towel; which makes me think it’s more likely a crack than casting flaw.
I can’t seem to get it to run right. If the carb is cracked, then that might explain this.
If anyone can tell me how to differentiate a crack from a casting anomaly I’ll be grateful. I’ll pour some gas in and see if it leaks down, but it hadn’t emptied in the week it’s been sitting.
All opinions welcome.

Edit; if I polish on it, and it goes away, it was a casting issue. Right? It didn’t leak when I filled the bowl w/ gas, but it wasn’t bolted down or hot, either. All suggestions definitely welcome. Odds are it’s a casting issue, I know, but i’m not gonna bolt it back up ’til I get it figured.

It’s normal. That is where hot molten metal has contacted already cooling molten metal during the casting process.

I would agree that it is not a crack. If you’re concerned, it could polish it out by pulling a strip of 400 grit wet or dry paper across it while holding it against the casting with your finger. It doesn’t take much water. I use that system to clean up breaker points using WD40 . . . 🙂

It is a casting defect.
I look at lots of them at work.
Cracks always start at an edge.

Yeah, no answer to my high speed bogging issue yet.
And, I see now that a crack in that place wouldn’t necessarily even affect performance. Just leak onto the manifold.
