Clean and flat is all you need!   If there are any divots or big scratches you can apply something.  Torque your bolts evenly,  you should be good to go.

While it is true that no sealer is used when these engines were assembled years ago.  No need of it, all surfaces were clean and flat.  This engine is no longer new.  If it were mine, I would be using a very fine coating of sealer (liquid stuff not silicone crap) on the outer edges of the block and cylinder head.

Needless to say, if there is a sealing issue where the gasket seals the combustion chamber, sealer is not going to be much help.  Take the time to clean every thing carefully, make sure surfaces are flat, and use a little sealer on the outer edges.
