I was wondering how successful it would be to “sleeve” the drive shaft seal area,

I’ve thought about that but haven’t tried it yet. The idea was to turn a stainless sleeve slightly larger than the diameter of the shaft and then weld it on. Then it could be finished to size in the lathe and keeping it true at the same time. The only issue then would be getting the bushing in the housing reamed/honed to fit as I’d have to send it out to a machine shop to get that done.

Here’s a video (“for entertainment purposes only”!) of Garry Maffei trying a speedi-sleeve on a drive shaft. [if I can get the forum to NOT remove the link]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6xghWrEmSU

Thanks Phil. His drive shaft is a lot nicer looking than mine, but looks like
it is indeed possible. Yes, it was very entertaining watching him
            use the claw hammer, lol.

Found a listing here for the sleeves……
              https://www.globaloring.com/?s=SRS99062

              Amazon has them ……….

Not exactly cheap at $27 plus…… especially if you ruin one.

Investigate and see if there is another seal with slightly smaller i.d. You could then grind the shaft and problem solved.

George, I don’t understand how that would work, being the seal is almost in the
middle of the drive shaft, unless the smaller seal would stretch over the drive shaft,
to the turned down area. Is that what you mean?
                  Thanks.

                    Buc,

That is what I though George was thinking. Just a slight difference, so it would stretch over.

Yep that’s what I meant unless the pitting is so deep that a seal won’t work.
