I have been digging in my Scott service manual. In a 1954 lower unit page it states to use Duco Cement under the impeller housing to place it to stay. IF I MAY ask what Duco Cement is please? 😯

          Wedgie,
Last housing I removed to replace D-shaft seals it was glued in with the light brown omc gasket sealer. Had to heat it up to get it out.
          thanks for the look up!!

Duco Cement is one of those oldschool solvent-based adhesives along the lines of Seal-All, Resistol and so on. If I recall, Duco has a yellowish color, and is somewhat flexible and ‘gummy’ even when fully cured. I believe Duco is more in the contact adhesive class than Seal-All.

Seal-All dries crystal clear and hard, and I know that it’s highly resistant to gas, oil, alcohol and so on. It can be used to seal up leaking fuel tanks, without having to drain the tank – you just have to work in steps, use a few layers of it.

If you have 3M847, use that. I seal all my impeller plates with it.

I wouldn’t call Duco a contact adhesive… It starts clear (but can yellow), and thins with acetone. It’s still my "go to" glue for ceramics — you need to apply a layer to porous surfaces and let it dry.

My neighbor, who does museum quality conservation work approves of it: it’s completely reversible (since it disolves in acetone).

                  Phil,
Why would a boat motor service manual show to use it to glue the impeller housing on to the lower unit? I do show a o-ring below the housing & the shaft seal below. Will it act like gasket sealer as well?
